Should you choose a business partner who is similar to you?

When starting a business partnership, one of your goals may be to avoid future partnership disputes. Maybe you have heard stories of partners getting involved in such serious litigation that there is no way for them to resolve it without simply selling the business and going their separate ways. You want to choose a business partner who will make your company stronger, not one who is going to cause a future dispute.

In some senses, it can be helpful to choose a business partner who is similar to you. Compatibility is important. You and that business partner are going to spend a significant amount of time together, and you are going to have to work together closely. If you are similar, the odds are greater that you will agree on decisions about the direction of the company or how financial assets should be used, helping you avoid disputes.

Complementary skills

At the same time, though, it can be detrimental to the business if the two of you are too similar and have a lot of overlapping skills. This could even lead to conflict because you both want to be in charge of the same decisions or the same areas of business.

Moreover, choosing someone with complementary skills can make your business stronger. It can even come down to personality types. If you are an introvert and you work with another introvert, it may be difficult for the two of you to network with other business owners or connect with your target audience. If you work with an extrovert, however, they can handle the public-facing side of the business while you focus on things behind the scenes.

This is just one example of how complementary skills can be beneficial, but it is also important to ensure that the two of you are compatible. Whether you are drafting a business partnership agreement or trying to resolve a future dispute through litigation, be sure you know exactly what legal steps you should take at this time.
